Andrew Jenkins MEng GMICE

Structural dynamics research student at Cambridge

About me

I am a PhD research student in structural dynamics at CUED, working on better simplified models for the early-stage design of base-isolated buildings. My research interests include soil-structure interaction and structural modelling.

Before starting my PhD, I worked as a site engineer during the construction of the HS2 London Tunnels. During my undergraduate (Peterhouse, m. 2018) I specialised in civil engineering, and continue to take a keen interest in infrastructure and the challenges Britain faces in building what we need for the future.

adj35 is my CRSid, and you can email me at <my CRSid> <at> cam.ac.uk or <my CRSid> <at> srcf.net

Software

I enjoy programming in my spare time, mostly in Python. Projects I've released include

I've also spent some time recently trying to fix a couple of bugs in scikit-umfpack, a library which can boost scipy's performance to be as good as Matlab when directly solving sparse matrix equations. In fact, it uses exactly the same backend as Matlab: Tim Davis's SuiteSparse. I will write up a bit more about this at a later date.

University

I am a member of Darwin College, the oldest of the postgraduate colleges. My undergraduate was at Peterhouse (m. 2018), the oldest of all the colleges. If you are a current Petrean, you may be interested in the menu website or the room reviews (login required) from the old JCR website.

During my undergraduate, I was SRCF Secretary for the year 2021-22, and chair of Cambridge University Scout & Guide Club (CUSAGC) in 2020-21. Both the SRCF and CUSAGC were good fun, and worth having a look at if you are a current student.
